Plural of nouns

This is a simple exercise that will help you find the plural forms of nouns. It will illustrate both regular and irregular patterns. This is also a useful exercise to introduce features of the Word Query function in Xaira.

How do you form the plural of nouns? Use the corpus to see what different forms a noun can take.
Suggested searches: Girl, boy, man, mouse, tooth, child, woman.

How to make a word query

  1. Open the Xaira Word search window (click on the Word Search button or use the File -> New Query -> Word menu).
  2. Type your search word in the box at the top of the Word Query box.
  3. Under the Lemmatab (in the right-hand part of the Word Query box) you select BNC from the drop-down list (if you cannot see the Lemma tab, tick the Controls box at the bottom right of your Word Query window).
