Report to BNC project Committee <date>5 July 1991 <author>Lou Burnard <body> <ol> <li><emph>Task group and other related meetings</emph> <p>OUCS staff attended two meetings of Task Group A and one of Task Group C, and also the ICAME Conference at Ilkley in May. <li><emph>Hardware and software</emph> <p>The Project's hardware (two SUN workstations, with CDROM driver and exabyte and cartridge tape decks together with 2 Gb disk storage) was finally installed on 5 June after considerable delay. Both machines are now connected to the local ethernet and will shortly be registered for e-mail from JANET. <p>Some transduction software was installed on the VAX. <li><emph>Database</emph> Work on designing the archive management database continued. A pilot implementation, using Ingres on the SUN, has begun. <li><emph>Accessions</emph> Twelve texts from OUP and one from Longman were received, totalling just under a million words. A working paper on text submission guidelines was prepared and circulated. Some experiments in handling typesetting tapes were carried out. <li><emph>Encoding Standard</emph> Some progress was made in defining a Corpus Document Interchange Format, based on the TEI's Draft Guidelines. This was discussed at a meeting of Task Group C and (more extensively) in collaboration with the Project's TEI Consultant, Michael Sperberg-McQueen at the TEI Workshop. <li><emph>Documentation</emph> <p>A start was made on organising a system for maintaining documents and reports within the project. Working paper BNCW01 describes the proposal. Aside from minutes and internal notes, working papers on corpus design (TGAW05), corpus encoding (TGCW01) and text submission (TGCW06 and TGCW08) were also prepared. </ol> </gdoc>
